School Maintenance Officer


 

We are looking for an excellent maintenance operative to join our busy team.

The Oak-Tree Group has 4 schools in Loughton, North Chingford, Buckhurst Hill and Epping with many buildings and extensive sites. The central Maintenance Team consists of 7 members of staff, with an additional 8 Site Managers/Assistant Site Managers at the schools and 12 cleaners. There are around 330 employees within the Group and around 1000 children.

Hours are from 7.45am until 4.45pm daily Mondays to Fridays throughout the year with 25 days' holiday + bank holidays. Free school lunches during term times are included, as is uniform and the allocation of a company van and tools. The position is to start as soon as possible and attracts an initial annual salary of £28,000.

The main purpose of the role is to help ensure that each school site is well-maintained, safe and secure at all times, and to liaise with the Group Maintenance Manager when the need arises for repairs and general maintenance.

The successful candidate will also be able to diagnose and solve day-to-day plumbing issues and carry out preventative maintenance with regard to plumbing works, including:

  • changing TMVs
  • installing sinks/toilets
  • running legionella checks
  • repairing pipes, joins, valves, drains etc

Candidates should live within 20 minutes of any of the school sites to ensure that any out of hours emergency callouts (attracting supplemental pay) can be made.

The successful candidate will show evidence of good organisation and administration as well as maintenance skills.

Plumbing Tasks:

  • To diagnose and solve day-to-day plumbing issues.
  • To carry out preventative maintenance with regard to plumbing works required at each site, including repairing pipes, joins, valves, drains etc.
  • To maintain basic plumbing systems, including changing TMVs.
  • To source and install sinks, toilets and/or showers as required.

Maintenance:

  • To help be responsible for the care and upkeep of the school sites, in conjunction with each school’s maintenance team and the central maintenance team.
  • To assist the Group maintenance team to carry out a variety of maintenance based projects.
  • To undertake general building maintenance works, ensuring a high standard of upkeep and safety.
  • To liaise with outside contractors when on site such as gas safe plumbers and electricians.
  • To monitor the performance of external contractors where necessary.
  • To carry out decoration and repairs as required.
  • To help clear snow from pathways when required.
  • To ensure a suitable level of quality and workmanship is maintained at all times.

Grounds Maintenance:

  • To work with the School Groundsmen and Gardeners to ensure the gardens and grounds look their best at all times.
  • To help maintain fences throughout the year.
  • To help with hard and soft landscaping as required.

Security:

  • To help ensure the security of each site.
  • To be vigilant throughout the school day with regard to visitors entering and leaving the site and to challenge unknown visitors when necessary.
  • To be a keyholder for each site.
  • To be available for callouts after hours, as much as is possible, on the rare occasions that an alarm goes off.
  • To help lock up if required after special events.

Health and Safety:

  • To have knowledge of each School’s Health and Safety Policy in relation to maintenance duties.
  • To ensure that Health and Safety policies are complied with at all times.
  • To ensure compliance with matters including COSHH, PAT testing, legionella testing etc.
  • To liaise with the Group Maintenance Manager on a regular basis.
  • To take reasonable care of your own health and safety and that of others around you.
  • To complete Risk Assessments for tasks where necessary.
  • To help with fire practices and emergency procedures and to act as a Fire Warden.
  • To help with arrangements to ensure that planned preventative measures are organised for the servicing of boilers, electricity supplies, security and fire systems.

General:

  • To help provide and help organise the provision of equipment needed for school events such as assemblies, parents’ evening, staff meetings and training days.
  • To transport and organise the transportation of equipment needed for off-site school events, such as the Carol Service and singing to the elderly.
  • To help the Parents’ Associations with special events where necessary.
  • To move deliveries around each site when necessary.
  • To ensure that the sites are clean and tidy and that any litter is cleared promptly.
  • To help in the car parks in the mornings when necessary with the influx of parental traffic.
  • To assist with the safekeeping and maintenance of School tools and equipment.
  • To ensure a suitable level of quality and workmanship is maintained at all times.
  • To help ensure that the Group’s minibuses and vans are safe, have fuel and are cleaned inside regularly.
  • To help ensure that the school minibuses are safe and have their checks carried out regularly.
  • To drive the school minibuses when required for school trips and visits.
  • To assist with the safekeeping and maintenance of School tools and equipment.

The Group Maintenance Officer should also be prepared to undertake other such specific duties that may be assigned by the Group Management Team.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Driving Licence; willingness and ability to drive the school vans and minibuses.
  • Should live within a 20-minute travel radius of any of the school sites to ensure emergency call outs can be made within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Experience working as a plumber on a variety of different tasks.
  • Possess good working knowledge of general building maintenance.
  • Good communication skills to liaise effectively with a range of colleagues.
  • Experience in the safe use of typical powered hand and bench tools.
  • An ability to undertake a wide range of maintenance activities to a high standard of workmanship.
  • Good organisation and administration skills.

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a school environment.
  • Experience in basic electrics.
